Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!!

We are off to a great start to 2015 here in 4th grade.  Despite the  closed day and indoor recess all week, we still had a fantastic first week back.  Reading MAPS tests were completed this week.  Results will be discussed at our upcoming conferences, but please ask your child about their score and how they felt it went.  I was extremely proud of the effort they put in and gains they are making this year so far.  The scores truly reinforced our knowledge that the more practice you do, the better you get!
We are excited to have a student teacher starting in our classroom on Monday.  She will be here only Mondays until March and then full time for eight weeks.  She will be joining us from SCSU.

Here is what we will be busy learning next week:

Language Arts:

New reading logs went home today and will be due next Friday.  It will be nice to get on the regular schedule again.  Thank you all for being flexible through these off weeks!

Comprehension: Compare and Contrast
Questions to reinforce this skill at home include asking them how things are similar? how are they different?

Vocabulary: Words of the week are companion, bond, intrude, charge
We will be adding 3 new Greek/Latin word parts to our collection (struct, vis, spect)

Word Study: Students were given new word lists today and will be tested on the patterns next Thursday.  The skill this week is rules to follow when adding the suffixes -ed or -ing to base words.

Writing:  We will be continuing to work on writing dialogue.  This week the students wrote 6-part comic strips, which they will be transforming into a dialogue story next week.

Math:

Math: Next week we will continue to solve multistep word problems and two-digit times two-digit multiplication problems. We will practice determining if we have too much or too little information within a story problem and practice creating our own multiplication story problems. We will use the Division Design activities to practice the division facts and introduce Mosaic Multiplication designs to strengthen our understanding of how to multiply large numbers. Also, we will be taking the MAP's Math test on Wednesday and Thursday. Remember, my blog has lots of extra practice activities for building math knowledge @ krupafourthgrade.blogspot.com
Good luck!

Have a great week!
