Happy Holidays!

I apologize for not posting on Friday as our internet here at school was down most of the day.  Here is a quick update for this week.

Math:  The students will be continuing unit 5.  They will not be testing on this unit until after the break.
There will not be a fact log going home for the break.  However, please help your child by finding everyday examples to be using math. Ex. counting money, elapsed time etc.

Language Arts:  This week we are looking at the different structural elements of drama.  We will be using this and practicing fluency by doing some holiday themed reader's theatre plays.  There will not be a reading log sent home, however, keeping up with the reading each day routine is greatly encouraged!  This week's reading log is due THURSDAY!

Bowling:  We will be going on our bowling field trip on Friday.  Our plan is to leave the school at 10:40am and return before a late lunch at 12:20pm.  Parents are invited to attend but must meet us at the bowling alley (Great River Bowl in Sartell).
*Students are NOT allowed to bring any extra money on this trip*

Our class will be visiting the Toys for Tots school store tomorrow.  They may bring money if they wish to purchase any gifts.  All of the money raised at this store goes to Toys for Tots!

There is no school from December 23rd through January 1st.  School begins again on Thursday, January 2, 2014.

I hope everyone has a wonderful winter/holiday break!  Stay warm and cherish the great time you get to spend with your friends and families.

12/6/2013

Happy Friday!

We had another great week!  We had a lot of fun learning about and making electric circuits in science today!  I was so impressed with the wonderful teamwork I saw happening.  We also took time to write scientific sentences about our predictions, observations and inferences.

Today the class had fun learning about similes and how authors use them in their writing. They practiced this skill by writing stories of their choice which needed to appropriately include at least 3 similes.  Have your student share with you some of the similes they thought of.

Next week in Language Arts, we will be focusing on using text evidence to help us draw conclusions.  We will be practicing looking closer into the text to find specific details.  We will also be using this skill to write an informational paragraph using the information we find.

I have been meeting individually with students to see if they are reading to increase their reading levels. I have been so impressed by the improvements our readers are making.  I absolutely love seeing the pride in their faces when they actually get to see and feel their hard work and practice paying off:)

They took their math test today and will be starting a new unit next week.

New reading and fact logs went home today and will be due next Friday.

We will be taking a fourth grade field trip to the bowling all on Friday, December 20th.  Permission slips went home today.

Have a great weekend/week and stay warm!

Happy Thanksgiving!

One of the things I am very thankful for this time of year is my job and being able to work with such a great group of students and fellow teachers every day.  I am also very thankful for the help and support from their families at home.  I hope everyone has a great holiday with their families and gets some time to rest and recharge.

Our class completed some turkey center pieces for your festive tables which included 6 different things they were thankful for.  We also did some non-fiction reading about Thanksgiving traditions in our history.  Take some time to ask your student what new facts they learned about things that surround this holiday.

Tuesday marked the last day of first trimester!  To make sure we are starting the 2nd trimester off in the right direction, we took some time in class to make some reading goals for ourselves.  The students looked at data from their benchmark test to determine two skills they are going to focus on and practice while reading.  They also made a plan for the first three genres of books they will be finishing this new trimester.

We finished up grading our compare and contrast essays and they will be coming home on Monday.  Please take some time to review your child's writing with him/her.  They worked very hard on these as we took steps through the whole writing process together.

Next week we will be working on forming questions before, during and after reading to check for comprehension.  This will incorporate all of the comprehension strategies we have been working on so far.  We will also be reviewing some of our decoding and vocabulary strategies.  My hope is to connect with each reader in the next couple of weeks to determine if their good fit reading level needs to be adjusted.  They are very excited to see how their practice has been improving their reading abilities and scores!

New reading/math fact logs went home yesterday and will be due next Friday.  The goals will remain 120 for reading and 50 for math.

They will be taking the Unit 4 math test towards the end of this week.

Have a wonderful, safe Thanksgiving!  Thank you for all you do and for shaping your students into the wonderful people they are:)

11/22

We have had a great week and are preparing for the end of the trimester.  I am having a hard time believing that one third of our school year is completed.  I have so much enjoyed getting to know and work with this wonderful group of students so far:)  The last day is on Tuesday, November 26th and report cards will be coming home the following week.  Your child's report card will include some sample work from what they are working hard on each day here at school.

We have a two day week approaching which leaves me with little updates to share.  In reading, we will be taking some time to look carefully at the progress we have made so far.  The students will be using their own personal data to make some goals in both reading and writing.
All fourth graders were expected to have 10 books finished by the end of the trimester in order to be on track for their 30 book goal.  They must be good fit books in order to count.  We will be having some celebration time for those who have reached this goal on Tuesday.

New reading/math fact logs went home today and will be due on TUESDAY, November 26th.  You may modify the minutes required to 80 for reading and 30 for math due to the shorter time period.

*Other Reminders*

2nd Trimester milk/juice and snack forms are due Tuesday
Book Orders are due Tuesday

11/15/2013

We had a great week which included celebrating Veteran's Day, taking the unit 3 math test and finishing up reading our different culture versions of Cinderella.  We had a reward movie activity today for all students that have their work completed.

Here is what next week is looking like..

Reading- We will be working on the comprehension skills of understanding characters and visualizing. We will also be practicing looking for different types of figurative language that authors use.

As we are nearing the end of our first trimester, please check in with your child on how many books they have completed towards their end of the year goal of 30.

New reading/ math logs were sent home today and are due next Friday.

Please get your book orders in before Thanksgiving break!

Writing- The students will be continuing to work on their compare and contrast essays. This week we will be focusing on revising and editing skills and beginning our final copies.

Math- Next week in our  math classes, we will begin preparing for Unit Four: Angles and Polygons. This unit introduces measuring angles using a protractor. Students use these concepts to sort and classify angles and triangles. Concepts involving angles are applied in rotations and in rotational symmetry. Concepts involving perimeter and area are extended to include perimeter of any polygon and area of triangles. Concepts involving patterns and congruence are applied as students explore transformations. Check out the interactive website listed on Mr. Krupa's blog to get a head start on practicing measuring angles with a protractor. Also, check with your child to make sure they have a protractor to bring to math class.

The last day of the trimester is Tuesday, November 26th.  There is no school the 27th, 28th or 29th.

Have a great week!!

11/8/13

We have had a great week!  Many of us were talking about how fast this week seemed to go by:)  Time flies when you are working hard and having fun!

We are full board into our multi-cultural Cinderella unit in language arts.  The students are learning that the Disney version is not the REAL version of this very old story.  In fact, it is one of the newest versions out there.  I have really enjoyed being able to listen to all of their great conversations about how the story is alike and different in different countries.  Please ask your child what versions they have read so far! We will continue with this unit next week and end it by writing a compare and contrast essay.

In writing, we are also working hard on writing Veteran's Day poems.  Two students from each fourth grade class will be reading their poems at the assembly next Friday.  We have a class full of wonderful writers!

In math, the students will be completing another study guide on Monday and then taking the Unit 3 test on Tuesday.

*NEW*  Reading logs will be looking a little different this week.  They are yellow and on the reverse side of them is a math fact practice log.  A green parent letter went home today explaining this.  It will be due with the reading long each Friday.

Next week reminders:
Math test on Tuesday
2 hour late start on Friday with Veteran's Day Program
Reading/Math Fact log due Friday

Next Week

I hope everyone had a great and safe Halloween! I was out sick the last two days of the week but I'm sure all of the students had a great time with the substitute teachers.  Because of my absence, I decided to postpone the White Elephant Sale until Monday. Any student who hasn't turned in their items or permission slips yet can still do so on Monday.
On Friday, new reading logs went home with all fourth graders and are due next Friday, November 8th.  The students also brought home a white homework sheet that I would love their families to help them with.  We will be starting a multicultural, compare/contrast unit in Language Arts this week and I thought it would be great if they did some exploring into their own history first!  Below are some bonus research questions. Your student can earn extra StarBucks for researching the answers and sharing their findings with the class.

1. When and where did the story Cinderella originate?

2. About how many versions of Cinderella are there?

Students will be tested on their Word Study words on Monday. They will also be bringing home new lists and patterns to practice.

Mr. Krupa will be starting a new math unit this week as they tested on Unit 3 on Thursday. Please continue to practice math facts at home.

Please check in with your student often on how they are doing and making sure they are completing their work.  About a third of our fourth graders unfortunately missed the October Reward for not having their required work completed.

Have a great week and let me know if you have any questions!

Friday, October 25, 2013

Thank you so much to everyone who was able to make it to conferences this week!  I was very proud of all of our students and how well they led their own conferences.  It was great watching the pride they had in themselves and sharing their educational goals with their families.  Thank you for your willingness to try something new and for all of your great feedback!

We have 2 SCSU student teachers starting in our room next week.  I always believe the more teachers the better so I am very excited to have them here for 3 hours a day for 6 weeks.

Our main reading skills for next week will be determining fact from opinion and summarizing. We will also be looking different suffixes and investigating some greek and latin word parts.

In preparation for our NEXT lessons, I would love for families to take the time and talk about where their own ancestors came from.  I am going to be encouraging students to interview members of their family to find out more about their own backgrounds and cultures.

We will be having our end of the month reward this week for all students who do not have any late work.  Please check with your child to be sure they are all caught up!

Our first White Elephant Sale will be held on Friday.  Students were given a permission slip that needs to be returned in order to participate.  We are practicing responsibility so they MUST have this form signed and they cannot get a new one if lost.
Friday is also pajama day and our school will be viewing the movie "Ant Bully" as a culmination to Bully Prevention Month.

If you thought of any other questions you may still have after conferences, please let me know!

Have a great weekend/week:)

Conference Week

Conference time is here!  I am so excited to watch our 4th graders lead their own conferences.  We have been practicing this at school and they have many wonderful things to share with you!

Our two main reading skills for this week are understanding characters and making inferences.  We have been working on looking deeply at the clues author's give us and using our own background knowledge.  We have so many thinkers in our class:)

In math, the students are still working in Unit 3 which focuses on place value and other number operations.

*Exciting News*  Our class has reached 100 books read!!  What a great milestone to reach while only in October!  Ask your child how many books they read out of this 100.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday due to morning conferences.

Other items due this week:
Book orders are due tomorrow.
Reading logs are due Thursday.

Next week we will be having our first White Elephant Sale.  Students will be bringing home a note further explaining this tomorrow.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon!  Have a great week!

Happy Friday!

We had a great and very productive week here in 4th grade!  We have been practicing different strategies to help us find the theme of a story and talked about many common themes that books have.  We will be taking our skill test for this week's lesson on Monday.
Reading W.I.N. is up and going!  Students will all be having word study in their groups on Mondays of each week.  They should be practicing their words at home using sorts and strategies taught at school.  They will be testing on their words the following Monday.
For math W.I.N. time, Mr. Krupa took time to train some of students to be expert teachers on different math concepts. Students got to choose what math topics they need more help/practice with.  I was so amazed on how well our class did with this process.  We have many future teachers in our class:)
Next week is our Education Minnesota (MEA) break already!  There will be no school on Thursday or Friday. Because of this, reading logs will be due on Wednesday, October 16th.
Next week we will be finishing up our lesson 4 activities and preparing for our student-led conferences.
If you have any questions, please let me know!  Thank you for all of your help and support from home and have a great weekend/week!

Our week in pictures!

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

This week we are focusing on theme in reading.  We are practicing using clues from the story to analyze what message the author is trying to tell us.  In writing, we are continuing to work on dialogue and will be adding dialogue to our personal narratives.  We are almost to the editing/revising stage!

New book orders went home this week.  Orders will be due on Wednesday, October 23rd.  Students put a sticker with our classroom's online code into their agendas.

We welcomed 2 new students into our classroom in the past couple of weeks.  It has been so great watching the class work together to make them feel welcome.  We sure do have a great group of students and I find many reasons to be proud of them everyday:)

New WIN groups started this week!  Please check in with your student to find out which group they are in and what they have been practicing so far.

Conferences are just around the corner!  I will be sending home date/time reminders later this week.  Remember: These conferences will be led by your student so they must be able to attend! I am very excited for you to see all of the great work they have been doing here at school.

Thursday will be this year's first Unity Day here at PV.  Please remind your child to wear their Unity T-shirts or any orange!

Due dates this week:
Friday, October 11th- Reading Logs and PV T-Shirt Orders
Please also be sure your student is finishing their math homework each night.

Next Week-  Fundraiser materials due!

Have a great rest of the week!!

Mid-Week Reminders

Students should be reading their 20 minutes each night.  Reading logs are due Friday.
Math homework should be signed by an adult each night and come to school the next morning completed. 2-6 was brought home today.  They have a study guide that will be due on Friday.  They will also be taking the Unit 2 test on Friday!

Pleasantview T-shirt orders went home today and are due Oct. 11th if interested.

We have been working hard on writing dialogue this week.  Ask your student about the partner writing activity they started today!

Reading W.I.N. groups will be starting on Monday!  Word Study will also be starting next week.  We will be sending something home to explain 'at home' practicing expectations.

I hope you are having a great week!
Yesterday was a very exciting day for us as we received all of our new classroom books!  These books came from donations received from a website called Donor's Choose.  I made a project to get more books into the classroom and my project was fully funded giving us around 200 new books.  My main focuses were on informational, higher level and high interest series. We took time yesterday to look at them and label them as a class.  It was a great activity and all of the students found books that they are very excited to read!!  We will be working on than you notes this week to send to all of our donors.

Books, Books, Books!!!

9/26

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our first two-hour late start.  Our focus Friday will be centered around math and they will be engaged in fun math activities all day! Tomorrow is also STORM spirit day, so make sure your child wears all of their STORM colors:)

Reading logs are due tomorrow.  A new one will be sent home that is due next Friday, 10/4.

Our main reading skills for next week are cause and effect and visualizing. To get your student's brain ready you can start asking them questions such as;
What caused this to happen?
What effect did the event have on the outcome?

*Try and relate to real world situations. Ex. If you don't brush your  teeth, then you may get cavities. Because you have been very responsible, you can stay up for an extra half hour on Saturday. etc.

We are still working through the writing process with our personal narratives.  Ask your child what kind of lead they decided to use to introduce their story! Next week we will be working on adding transition words and dialogue.

W.I.N. groups are ALMOST ready to be up and running! We are excited to  start our groups and begin working on the specific skills that they need.  Word study will also be taking place in these groups.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend MindTrap

Dee Septor, the famous magician, claimed to be able to throw a ping-pong ball so that it would go a short distance, come to a dead stop, and then reverse itself.  He also added that he would not bounce the ball against any object or tie anything to it. How could he perform this act?

Think of an answer with your student and send it with them on Monday! Their minds were already warping when they left!

Happy Thinking:)

Weekend To-Dos

Students received their corrected math tests back from Unit 1 today.  Please look over their tests with them.  They need to have them signed and brought back to school on Monday.

New reading logs went home today.  They are due next Friday.

Next week we will be working on author's purpose.  Help your child's brain get ready by asking them about the purpose for things they are reading or even watching on TV.  The 3 main purposes we will be working on are to persuade, entertain or inform.

Have a great weekend!

PIN Information

Thank you to those of you who made it last night!
