9/26

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our first two-hour late start.  Our focus Friday will be centered around math and they will be engaged in fun math activities all day! Tomorrow is also STORM spirit day, so make sure your child wears all of their STORM colors:)

Reading logs are due tomorrow.  A new one will be sent home that is due next Friday, 10/4.

Our main reading skills for next week are cause and effect and visualizing. To get your student's brain ready you can start asking them questions such as;
What caused this to happen?
What effect did the event have on the outcome?

*Try and relate to real world situations. Ex. If you don't brush your  teeth, then you may get cavities. Because you have been very responsible, you can stay up for an extra half hour on Saturday. etc.

We are still working through the writing process with our personal narratives.  Ask your child what kind of lead they decided to use to introduce their story! Next week we will be working on adding transition words and dialogue.

W.I.N. groups are ALMOST ready to be up and running! We are excited to  start our groups and begin working on the specific skills that they need.  Word study will also be taking place in these groups.

Have a great weekend!

Homework for today:
Read 20 minutes and fill out reading log
Read over math parent letter and complete 2-1

Fundraiser information and materials went home today!

We also started a new routine for when we are finishing books.  They will be filling out a 'book finished' form that I will review before their book can be recorded on their genre requirement sheet.  All students that have at least 10 books finished by the end of the first trimester will get to participate in a reading celebration!

Additional things due tomorrow: book orders, student council letters

Weekend MindTrap

Dee Septor, the famous magician, claimed to be able to throw a ping-pong ball so that it would go a short distance, come to a dead stop, and then reverse itself.  He also added that he would not bounce the ball against any object or tie anything to it. How could he perform this act?

Think of an answer with your student and send it with them on Monday! Their minds were already warping when they left!

Happy Thinking:)

Weekend To-Dos

Students received their corrected math tests back from Unit 1 today.  Please look over their tests with them.  They need to have them signed and brought back to school on Monday.

New reading logs went home today.  They are due next Friday.

Next week we will be working on author's purpose.  Help your child's brain get ready by asking them about the purpose for things they are reading or even watching on TV.  The 3 main purposes we will be working on are to persuade, entertain or inform.

Have a great weekend!

PIN Information

Thank you to those of you who made it last night!

If you missed Parent Information Night,  here are some of the important things we went over..

BLOG!-  This will be our primary communication tool used this year.  Please check this blog regularly for homework, updates and other news.  Subscribe for email notifications when a new blog is posted!

Background Checks-  All volunteers who come into our building (including WatchDogs) need to have a background check.  This is for the safety of our students.  You can find applications on our district website under Volunteer Opportunities.

Reading- All 4th graders have reading logs due every Friday and they need to be signed by an adult.  Students also have a 30 book goal for the year as well as a genre requirement.  Please check in with your child often to see how they are progressing with this goal.

Math- Students should be getting their homework signed and practicing math facts each night.  If you would like a math book to use at home, please let me know.

After School Plans- Be sure you send a note or call the school if your child's after school plans change.

Students brought home an ABC's of 4th Grade handout with more important information to review.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT is Thursday at 6:20-6:40pm I hope to see everyone there:)

9/18

Today in reading we talked about story structure and applied it to our own "good fit" books.  When your child is reading at home, ask them questions about the characters, setting and plot.

We are in the pre-writing phase of our first personal narratives.  I can already tell we have excellent writers in our class!  We worked on our 6W charts and will finish them tomorrow.  Ask your child what memory they chose to write about.

They did a practice math test today in class and will be taking the math test tomorrow.

Other reminders for the night:
read 20 minutes and enter on log
practice multiplication facts
